Government of Canada investments building infrastructure, boosting tourism and helping area entrepreneurs
July 16, 2019 – Schreiber, ON – Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario – FedNor
Residents and businesses of the Township of Schreiber and the Superior North region will benefit from new economic, business and tourism-related opportunities thanks to two Government of Canada investments totalling nearly $3.4 million.
The funding was announced today by the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, and Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay—Superior North, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for FedNor.
First, a FedNor investment of $1.7 million in the Superior North Community Futures Development Corporation (SNCFDC) will ensure that entrepreneurs looking to start a business or take their existing businesses to the next level find the assistance they need. Specifically, the funding is supporting the SNCFDC’s ongoing operations for the next five years. As a result, the organization will provide small businesses and community organizations with advisory services, technical support and access to capital throughout its designated service area, which stretches from Dorion to Manitouwadge.
The remaining $1.67 million will support several local priority projects with the Township of Schreiber, including the construction of the North Shore Express and Discovery Centre, an important new tourism attraction. The funding will also enable the revitalization of the community’s downtown core and the recruitment of an investment attraction consultant to assist with private sector attraction and retention. These activities will highlight Schreiber’s history as a railway town and are expected to help create up to five jobs, launch four new businesses, expand five existing businesses and attract approximately 14,000 new visitors annually to the community.
