Government of Canada investments building infrastructure, boosting tourism and helping area entrepreneurs
July 16, 2019 – Schreiber, ON – Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario – FedNor
Residents and businesses of the Township of Schreiber and the Superior North region will benefit from new economic, business and tourism-related opportunities thanks to two Government of Canada investments totalling nearly $3.4 million.
The funding was announced today by the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, and Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay—Superior North, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for FedNor.
First, a FedNor investment of $1.7 million in the Superior North Community Futures Development Corporation (SNCFDC) will ensure that entrepreneurs looking to start a business or take their existing businesses to the next level find the assistance they need. Specifically, the funding is supporting the SNCFDC’s ongoing operations for the next five years. As a result, the organization will provide small businesses and community organizations with advisory services, technical support and access to capital throughout its designated service area, which stretches from Dorion to Manitouwadge.
The remaining $1.67 million will support several local priority projects with the Township of Schreiber, including the construction of the North Shore Express and Discovery Centre, an important new tourism attraction. The funding will also enable the revitalization of the community’s downtown core and the recruitment of an investment attraction consultant to assist with private sector attraction and retention. These activities will highlight Schreiber’s history as a railway town and are expected to help create up to five jobs, launch four new businesses, expand five existing businesses and attract approximately 14,000 new visitors annually to the community.
“The Government of Canada is committed to supporting communities in their efforts to stimulate economic and business growth, and create opportunities for their residents. I am proud that our government is investing to develop Canada’s tourism sector and is focused on helping to build strong and sustainable communities and encouraging the growth of innovative small businesses.”
“Our government is making ambitious strategic investments that strengthen the tourism sector and enhance business development in all areas of Northern Ontario and across the country. These investments will help attract additional visitors to the region, foster strong business growth and diversify the regional economy for many years to come.”
“I am thrilled that the Government of Canada recognizes our commitment to promoting community and economic growth along the North Shore. This financial assistance will go a long way in helping us in our efforts to support business development, create jobs and improve the commercial and industrial base of the many communities we serve throughout the region.”
“We are very pleased with this investment from FedNor in support of our North Shore Express and Discovery Centre and other business and economic development priorities in the Township of Schreiber. This investment
will help us attract and expand businesses and diversify our economy. It will also help us draw additional visitors to the community, which will be very beneficial for our local businesses.”
