Government of Canada investing over $600,000 in AI innovation in Northern Ontario
In order for the industries of today to continue growing and building the national economy in a fast-changing world, innovation and technology adoption must be at the centre of development. Canada has helped lead the world in AI research, and now strategic action needs to be taken to ensure that that strength creates real benefits for Canadians.
To that end, the Government of Canada is committed to a national AI strategy focused on protecting Canadians, building skills, driving AI adoption, strengthening sovereign infrastructure, scaling Canadian companies, and working with trusted partners.
That is why the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for FedNor, today announced a total FedNor investment of $634,110 in support of three innovative AI-related projects across Northern Ontario.
The Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre will receive $456,000 in support of their Youth Tech Impact Program (YTIP), which will see young professionals undertake engagement opportunities focused on innovative AI and technology projects with small to medium-sized enterprises in Northern Ontario. The YTIP will allow Northwestern Ontario companies to hire and train skilled youth to develop or implement new technologies, which will give young professionals hands-on experience and entrepreneurial insight through collaboration with business owners. The YTIP will take place in three 15-week cohorts supporting 30 businesses in Northern Ontario. This program will support business growth and development in Northwestern Ontario for enterprises that lack in-house capacity or technology expertise. It will address challenges faced by small and medium-sized enterprises, such as skills gaps, AI integration complexities, and compliance with regulatory and industry standards, while supporting the retention of skilled young professionals in Northwestern Ontario.
Kinmetrix will receive $155,000 to support the development of an AI-powered physical rehabilitation tool. This project will transform Kinmetrix’s smart fitness system from a trainer-operated tool to a fully independent, AI-powered platform for individual users, expanding commercialization and marketability. This will not only support direct consumer use increased profitability for users, but also the generation of novel data insights, access to high-performance Northern Ontario-built training technology, and the creation and/or maintenance of four full-time jobs.
The remaining $23,110 will go to Muskoka Lakes Chamber of Commerce to enable AI adoption and integration to support members and visitors seeking information. This will help to optimize administration and streamline requests for local information while guiding visitors directly to relevant resources. The project will help improve the Chamber’s services and strengthen local economic impact by reducing administrative burden, creating a more responsive business support ecosystem. The results of this investment will also provide a practical framework that other Northern Ontario organizations and businesses could replicate.
Today’s announcement will help to strengthen Canada’s position as a leading-edge economy by fostering Canadian talent, driving industry innovation and adoption, and fostering commercialization so Canadian companies can continue growing. These investments are a reflection of the Government of Canada’s AI for All approach, empowering Canadians to benefit from the opportunities presented by new technology.
